The House of Bishops of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda (PEAR), meeting in Kigali June 12-13, 2009, elected three missionary bishops, appointing them to serve in the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMiA). The Rev. Dr. Todd Hunter, leader of the Anglican Mission’s Western Initiative called Churches for the Sake of Others; the Rev. Canon Doc Loomis, Canon Missioner for the Anglican Mission; and the Rev. Silas TAK Yin Ng, Rector of Richmond Emmanuel, British Columbia, will be consecrated in September 2009.
In presenting candidates to fellow bishops, the Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy, III, Anglican Mission Chairman, noted that these new bishops would enhance the expansion of the Anglican Mission, particularly in the western regions of the US and in Canada. The House of Bishops responded to the nominations with a unanimous election and the release of an official Communiqué announcing their decision.
Once again, we are grateful for the consistent trust and support demonstrated by the Rwanda House of Bishops, said Bishop Murphy. As the Anglican Mission grows and expands west of the Mississippi, additional bishops will assist us in our mission to reach those who do not yet know the saving power of Jesus Christ.
Todd, Doc and Silas are men of faith, vision and passion, and they also have a strong track record of proven results, Bishop Murphy added. I have no doubt that each will add unique gifts to the Council of Bishops and will work effectively to expand the Kingdom of God in our missionary movement.
The Anglican Mission’s Council of Bishops is charged with providing oversight to clergy, congregations and Mission Networks; casting the “big picture” vision for the Anglican Mission; and ensuring theological alignment with historic Christianity as received by the one holy catholic and apostolic Church. The work of the Council of Bishops represents a careful balance of oversight between “what already is” within the Mission, and an ongoing commitment to both envision and implement “what is yet to be.”
The bishops-elect will be consecrated in September, and specific details will be announced when arrangements are finalized.
David Loomis, affectionately known to HONA-ites as Doc, has served as Canon
Missioner for the Anglican Mission since September 2007. In that capacity
as well as serving as the Network Leader of the Heart of North America (HONA)
Network, Doc is involved with planting new churches, raising up leaders and
opening new territory for the Kingdom in the US and Canada. Doc also
serves as Chairman for the Anglican Church in North America's (ACNA) Committee
on Mission and teaches church planting in the DMin and MDiv programs at Gordon
Conwell Seminary in Massachusetts.
A significant number of new churches and missions have been planted under Doc's
leadership during the last four years. Beginning with a single Northeast
Ohio Congregation, three Networks have been birthed. Now, with the partnership
of the Midwest Network, there are four Networks in one region. The region,
called The Heart of North America, includes The Lighthouse, River of Life,
CrossRoads (replacing HONA as a Network moniker) and the Midwest. Doc
also helps provide oversight for churches in Ontario and Quebec for the ACiC.
Doc was trained and licensed in the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) where he served as pastor from 1981 - 1997. From
1997 until 2003, he worked with two church plants in Ohio as an independent
Christian church planter. In 2003, Doc began working with orthodox
Anglicans in Ohio and ultimately accepted a call as pastor of an emerging
church in northeast Ohio. This congregation, Holy Trinity, eventually
affiliated with the Anglican Mission, leading to Doc's ordination by Bishop Barnum
in 2004. While serving this parish, Doc was called to birth a family of 8
churches in the surrounding area.
Doc holds Masters and Doctoral degrees in ministry. He is married to Ellen, who
ministers mightily as a worship leader, and the couple resides in Medina, Ohio.
The Loomis' have four grown Christian children, ages 19 to 33, and four
grandchildren.
Please pray for the Loomis family as they enter his new season of ministry.
