MI Anglicans share space with Jewish congregation A 'portable cathedral' makes sure there's music By JODEE TAYLOR jtaylor@record-eagle.com TRAVERSE CITY -- When the Rev. Kurt Henle brought his Anglican mission to Traverse City in 2008, it was without a home. "We didn't want to rent a storefront because we wanted a sacred space," he said. Word went out in the faith community that a congregation was looking for a place to worship on Sunday mornings. Trouble is, a lot of places are already being used on Sunday mornings.Except ... "The ark stays where it is with the torah scrolls in it," said Rabbi Albert Lewis of Congregation Beth-El, Traverse City's oldest synagogue -- and the oldest synagogue in continuous use in Michigan. "We make sure it's all set up for them and they make s ure it's all set up for us." Lewis said the only conflict was the religious education classes, which are now held in the basement of Horizon Books. Otherwise, the Jews and the Anglicans happily co-exist. "We couldn't have dreamed of a better cooperation," Henle said. A large part of the All Saints service revolves around the traditions of the Anglican church -- especially music. Henle has turned that into a science. "It's all possible through digital technology," he said. He developed the technology for the "portable cathedral," using a laptop computer with speakers to broadcast organ and choir music. He even wrote up the technical notes for the church's Web site so others can follow suit. Henle had a previous career as a biomedical research scientist and faculty member of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The Anglicans bring in their prayer book -- which dates to 1662 -- and rearrange the chairs for the congregants, usually about 12 to 18 people, Henle said.
Congregation Beth-El holds its own services monthly, which means the Anglicans aren't constantly moving furniture.
From the All Saints Website:
At All Saints Anglican Church, we join with all Christians in Traverse City and throughout the world to worship God the Father, through Jesus Christ the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
We are Biblical, Evangelical, and Liturgical. The doctrine and practice of our Christian Faith is grounded in The Book of Common Prayer tradition of the historic and worldwide Anglican Communion, which dates back to Thomas Cranmer in 1549. It is our Mission to provide reverent worship, sacred music, Biblical teaching, and a loving Parish home where all are welcome. Through God’s Word and Sacrament, we seek to "grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). We approach Christian formation through well-balanced Biblical teaching, working to develop and equip God’s people, of all backgrounds and ages, and living as productive saints in Christ's Church and the world.
