What's on the Grill?

Sunday April 18, 2010

As the Heart of North America Network Leaders prepare for a strategy meeting in Chicago in late April, one thing that will definitely be on our agenda is the development of strategies to launch and support a number of new churches which are scheduled to open in the second half of 2010.

In an effort share some of the exciting news about these new missions with those who may be called to join with us, here is a glimpse at what we think God is up to around the HONA region. If you, or someone you know, is interested in partnering with one of our new works, please drop us a note and let us know. amiamission@yahoo.com.

Please pray for these planters when you remember the Network church family to our Lord.

Peoria, IL Planter, Greg Lynn is wrapping up his MDiv in the Phoenix area at Fuller. Greg has several year of excellent ministry experience already and with his wife Alicia and their family will be moving to Illinois later this summer to break ground on a new work in Peoria. But St. Michael’s Network Leader Tom Tirman is already working to get familiar with the area and build a base for the Lynn’s. The plan is to have a congregation on the ground before the Lynn’s arrive.

Peoria is home for the Lynn’s. There is family close by and they’ll have a strong network of connections from which to draw key leadership. We couldn’t ask for a better opportunity.

Kalamazoo, MI We are traveling to MI later this week to meet our new church planter for this Western Michigan city. We’ll be meeting with some excellent connections while we’re in K-zoo and hope to begin a study in the area sometime in the next few months.

We’re blessed to be working with our Ugandan friends the Revs. Andrew and Summer Gross who are pastoring a church in South Haven, MI. Andrew and Summer have been very helpful in helping us build relationships in the K-zoo area and working with them is wonderful partnership.

Downtown Indianapolis The St. Michael network is in conversations with property owners in downtown Indi about renting a wonderful space for a church plant. If and when the deal goes through, the shared ministry team will begin recruiting a launch team and evangelizing the neighborhood.

An urban ministry in Indi would be a perfect addition to the growing St. Michael family and provide a local outreach opportunity in which all of the AMiA area churches could participate.

Detroit, MI Mike Dagle, a young planter from Michigan has been meeting with our Detroit planter Dean Simmer and is a candidate for orders. He likes the idea of working close by Dean and the pair is looking to begin a new work in Detroit this year.

Rev. Ryan Hofacre has already begun a good work in Columbus, and I’m sure that these two men will become a strong force for the Gospel in Ohio’s capitol city.

More 2010 News Since the beginning of the year, we’ve also seen planters arrive in Nicholasville, KY (Lee McLeod), Bloomington, and Kokomo, IN (Michael’s shared ministry team), and Fort Wayne, IN (Rick Leone) and welcomed new congregations in Twinsburg, OH (Rev. Ken Bieber; Emmanuel Fellowship) Traverse City, MI (Rev. Kurt Henle; All Saints) and Erie, PA (William Shontz; Trinity Anglican). We’ve also partnered with Ron Allen and the folks at Heartland Church in Fort Wayne, IN and are preparing to receive Rev. Ron Allen, his wife Rev. Carolyn Allen, and Rev. John Youse as clergy in our Network. Ron is already very involved in church plant coaching in our region.

In other clergy news, William Shontz, (Trinity Anglican; Erie, PA) was recently welcomed as a Lay Pastor. Upcoming (April-May) ordinations include: Rev. Matthew Purmort, Priest (Cross Anglican Fellowship; Lexington, KY); David Stiles, Deacon (Cincinnati Anglican; Springdale, OH), Rev. Joe Mlaker, Deacon (Eagle River, WI) and Steven Steitz, Deacon (Christ the King; DeWitt, MI). We have also been blessed to receive into our Network clergy fellowship the Revs. Vicki Galdding (AL) and Sherry Adams (FL). Vicki is in the early stages of church plant development in AL and Sherry is hard at work developing a Network clergy support program for HONA.

Later this month, the Rev. Peter Mathews will be invested as our first Canon to the Missionary Bishop in Lexington, KY. Canon-elect Matthews is developing discipleship, educational and church planting resources for our region. Also taking on new leadership responsibilities, The Rev. Tom Tirman was elected Network Leader for the growing St. Michael Network based in Indiana. Tom leads a shared ministry team in Indi which has birthed several new works in a few short years.Tom joins his brothers in Network Leadership Revs. Allen Kannapell, Joe Boysel, and Peter Matthews.

In Hudson, OH, Holy Trinity Anglican has called the Rev. Joe Boysel to be its rector. The Boysel family is now in Hudson (From Circleville, OH) and Joe will be installed in May. St. Matthew’s Lapeer, MI recently called the Rev. David Hudspeth  of AL (See story in the news section) to be their third rector. David will be ordained priest in May and hopes to be in MI by July.
